Sorry for the blur-o-vision pictures, but my potato wouldn’t focus very well.
Needless to say, the Jag’s rear drop links and tie rods were in pretty desperate need of attention. Odd as almost everything else looks to be in good shape.
Almost done, but around 11PM last night the passenger side tie rod stripped out so I’m cutting it out today. Gave me a chance to hit everything with penetrating fluid overnight.
Also looks like I need new parking brake pads (separate caliper from the main ones) but, naturally, to do that requires a special electronic tool to tell the parking brake computer to release the cable. Also looks like if I ever need to replace the actuator you have to remove the rear subframe and diff. Hooray!
Brakes aren’t as bad as they look, but I am surprised they’re solid and not slotted.

I love the teal & pink scripting on the brake caliper. What year was this Jag again, 1987?
Also love separate parking brake calipers!

This thing is clearly meant to be a drift car with the separate calipers.

You do not need to remove the rear subframe or diff to replace the rear actuator. though lowering the diff a bit helps. They had a high failure rate when these first came out. And they did not fail in the released position.... the cables were a pita to cut so you could move the car. And yes, you do need the special tool to release the motor, unless you are good with reading wiring diagrams and can build the tool yourself. Wasn’t difficult, mine is still laying around somewhere, built it out of an old remote starter button.
Check the front sway bar bushes as well, they had a high failure rate and would lead to some interesting noises in the front. Pay close attention to torque specs!

Haha they’re meant to be green and red, but time + sun = pink and teal.

Thanks for the tips! Yeah I figured it was something I could cook up at home, just bitching haha. Given all the tooling involved I’m at least going to get it quoted from a Jag shop. Given it is the parking brake I’m not too worried... for the moment.
Fronts looked OK. I think someone was taking reasonably good care of this thing until the last couple years. The torque specs are infuriating because I don’t have the right tools to actually check the torque (can’t hold the rod end and get a torque wrench on there...). I’ll ask the alignment shop to take a double check .

If the motor ever fails, just cut the cables and unplug it. You will get some stern warnings, but other than that, meh.
Just wait until those front ball joints fail :) lots to look forward to!

Ugh yeah I was looking at what it was going to take to do the upper control arms on the front. Not a lot of fun. It is insane because (from my perspective) this car is HUGE, yet there is so little room in the engine bay. Hell it is 7" longer than my Land Rover, which seats 7 and has this engine’s dad in there, so it isn’t like it is MUCH bigger.
So strange.

Earlier this year a couple of my coworkers went to Norway (sadly I wasn’t on this project ). One of the guys is a huge metal fan and was able to track down an original pressing of Dawn of the Black Hearts. I was told it set him back a princely sum.

The manual was pretty coy about it but did inform me that the electric handbrake can be activated while the car is in motion. For emergencies only, of course.

Yeah. The guy who sits next to me told me about it. He’s an old school metal guy, has some cool stories about seeing Ozzy and Preist back in the day. But he was asking me if I knew anything about this album, Im like the other metal dude in the office, so I had to kind of explain the black metal scene to him.
